Finding Relief From Back Pain

Common Habits That Contribute To Neck Pain

Living with chronic neck pain can have a profound impact on your family, work performance, and overall quality of life. You may have tried several different remedies to eliminate your neck pain, but you may find that nothing seems to provide you relief. You might be surprised to learn that some of your everyday habits could be contributing to this pain. Here are a few common bad habits that could be contributing to your chronic neck pain.

Improper Sleep Habits

Many of the most common habits that place strain on an individual's neck occur when they are sleeping. Here are a few ways you are inadvertently harming your neck while you are sleeping and simple tricks to help ensure you wake up with less pain.

You may be using the wrong pillow. Whether it is sleeping on a pillow that is too soft or using too many pillows, improper use of pillows is a common source of neck problems. Instead, use a firm pillow that comfortably supports your whole head and shoulders.

You may be sleeping on the wrong mattress. Choose a mattress that is comfortably firm and not too soft.

You may be sleeping on your stomach. Sleep on your back whenever possible, which allows you to keep your head and neck properly aligned on your pillow.

There are pillows specially made to comfortably support the head and neck that are perfect for neck pain sufferers, as well.

Poor Posture

One of the most common causes of neck pain is poor posture. This includes improper posture while sitting and standing. For example, if you spend time on your laptop or phone, chances are you are slouching with your head down. Staying in this position for long periods of time can unnaturally strain your neck.

Pay attention to your posture when you are walking and sitting. Make sure your back is straight, head is forward, and that you are not slouching. Hold your arms up while using the phone and try placing your laptop on a table, which helps keep your head up and eases tension on your shoulders and neck.

Not Talking to Your Doctor

Finally, if you are experiencing even minor neck pain a few days a month, it is critical to visit your doctor. In addition to helping you determine the cause of your neck pain and giving you lifestyle advice to find relief, your physician can diagnose any underlying conditions that could be contributing to your neck pain.

Chronic neck pain is a common condition that could arise from your everyday bad habits. If you have any questions about chronic neck pain care, don't hesitate to contact your physician or chiropractor.
